Coin Press No. 1 is a truly unique piece of Nevada Coin Press No. 1 is a truly unique piece of Nevada history. Manufactured by Morgan & Orr and powered by steam, this press was used at the Carson City Mint in the late 1800s to transform silver from Nevada’s Comstock Lode into U.S. coins that circulated nationwide. Unlike hand-hammered coins, which could take minutes to produce a single coin, this steam-powered press could strike a coin in seconds and produce thousands in a day revolutionizing coin production. What makes Coin Press No. 1 especially rare is that it is the only coin press in the world still located in its original mint building and one that still operates today, preserved at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City as a powerful reminder of how Nevada history was pressed into metal. Follow along for more Nevada history and come see Coin Press No. 1 in action on Saturdays at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City.
