There’s no shortage of cool escapes when it comes to things to do in Carson City in summer, especially when water’s involved. You might not know it, but we actually love water sports out here.

Check Out the Carson River

  • Embark on the Carson River Aquatic Trail, a 12.6-mile stretch of water that winds through canyons and past relics from the Comstock mining era. With well-marked launch points, paved parking, restrooms, and picnic areas, it’s a great day trip for beginners or families.
  • Float the Upper River for 3.3-miles. Cottonwoods line the banks and, if you keep your eyes peeled, you might just spot Nevada wildlife, including wild horses, bald eagles, turtles, or even owls.
  • Feeling a little more adventurous? Tackle the Lower River section from Morgan Mill to Santa Maria River Access Park in Dayton. This 9.3-mile route mixes fun whitewater (Class II and III rapids) with high desert beauty.
  • Carson River is a hidden gem for those who love fishing. Cast a line and catch a rainbow trout, carp, bass, or whitefish.

Keep Cool in the City

Wanting a more family-friendly vibe that kids (and adults) of all ages can enjoy? Bob McFadden Plaza is the go-to downtown hangout spot with shady seating, easy access to dining options, and a splash zone for young kids. There’s even a built-in stage where people perform throughout the year.

Take a Drive Up to a World-Famous Lake

Carson City is just a 20-mile drive from Lake Tahoe, making it the perfect basecamp for visiting a place where alpine air and crystal-clear waters offer quite a picturesque cool-down. There’s definitely no shortage of things to do in Carson City in summer when you have Lake Tahoe as your backyard! Swim, boat, or lounge lakeside.

If you’re an adventurous type that wants to soak up the heat outdoors, the Cap to Tahoe Trail connects the capital steps of Carson City to the gorgeous views of Lake Tahoe in one single trail! You could even continue on all the way to Canada. This trail offers beautiful views of Carson City, Washoe Valley, and the wonderful Lake Tahoe. Just make sure you’re prepared with plenty of water, sunscreen and snacks for the long trek ahead. 

Hit the Greens

Northern Nevada is full of stunning golf courses, four of which can be found in Carson City. Summer in Nevada offers beautiful mountainous views and a cooler climate for you to enjoy a nice day out on the golf course. Whether you’re an aspiring pro or an amateur, you’ll want to take a swing at these challenging yet beautiful courses like Eagle Valley Golf Course or Silver Oak Golf Course. 

2. Grab an Ice-Cold Treat

Nothing says summer in Carson City like something sweet and chilly. If you want a cozy atmosphere and great service in the center of this charming town, grab a scoop (or three) at Scoups Ice Cream & Soup Bar, where delicious flavors change with the seasons. What locals are savoring: Espresso Explosion, Huckleberry Heaven, and nut-centric flavors, like pistachio and peanut butter chocolate. 

More of a hops-and-brews person? Summer in Carson City, Nevada offers plenty of breweries and pubs to sit down and enjoy a pint at.

3. Enjoy the A/C Inside

Summer in Carson City doesn’t mean you have to stay outside all day (and, let’s face it—sometimes you just want to bask in the air conditioning!). In fact, some of the most memorable things to do in Carson City in summer happen indoors. 

We’ve got plenty of museums and indoor attractions, most of which are family-friendly and perfect for the whole family to enjoy: 

  • Step into The Nevada State Museum to explore everything from underground mine replicas to ancient mammoths. This museum is also home to the Carson City Mint and the Coin Press No. 1. 
  • Head next door to the Nevada State Railroad Museum, where you can learn about the region’s deep railroading history, and then ride a real steam engine on select weekends!
  • Let your kids’ imaginations run wild and give yourself a break from the heat at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. This venue is packed with interactive exhibits, pint-sized play spaces, and creative fun.
  • Step into the story of Nevada’s Native peoples at the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum. Housed in a stunning stone building, the museum shares powerful history, art, and voices from Stewart alumni.

4. Kick Back in the Shade

Not quite ready to head indoors? There are still plenty of ways to enjoy summer in Carson City without melting. These events keep things cool by happening in the shade or after the sun starts to dip.

  • Father’s Day Powwow: Celebrate tradition and community at this powerful event hosted at Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum. With drum circles, dancers in regalia, and vendors serving cool drinks and handmade crafts, it’s an immersive way to learn about Native culture in the region.
  • Levitt AMP Summer Concert Series: These events are for those who love music, food trucks, and hanging out with their friends. Every week from late June to late August, you can enjoy a free concert at The Change Companies Stage in Brewery Arts Center Plaza. Bring your kids, family, grandparents, or come and enjoy the show solo! 
  • Taste of Downtown: This family-friendly event is definitely worthy of your attention! One ticket gets you bites and sips from Carson City’s top eateries—all served up al fresco. As the sun starts to set, downtown turns into a walkable wonderland of flavors and live music. 
  • Farmer’s Market: Start your Saturday off with a little bit of everything! This local favorite opens at 8:30 am and runs till 1:00 pm. You’ll find fresh produce, artisan goods, and shaded booths lining the pavilion in Mills Park.
