  • Embark on the Carson River Aquatic Trail, a 12.6-mile stretch of water that winds through canyons and past relics from the Comstock mining era. With well-marked launch points, paved parking, restrooms, and picnic areas, it’s a great day trip for beginners or families.
  • Float the Upper River for 3.3-miles. Cottonwoods line the banks and, if you keep your eyes peeled, you might just spot Nevada wildlife, including wild horses, bald eagles, turtles, or even owls.
  • Feeling a little more adventurous? Tackle the Lower River section from Morgan Mill to Santa Maria River Access Park in Dayton. This 9.3-mile route mixes fun whitewater (Class II and III rapids) with high desert beauty.
  • Carson River is a hidden gem for those who love fishing. Cast a line and catch a rainbow trout, carp, bass, or whitefish.

Keep Cool in the City

Bob McFadden Plaza is the go-to downtown hangout spot with shady seating, easy access to dining options, and a splash zone for young kids. There’s even a built-in stage where people perform throughout the year.

Take a Drive Up to a World-Famous Lake

Carson City is just a 20-mile drive from Lake Tahoe, making it the perfect basecamp for visiting a place where alpine air and crystal-clear waters offer quite a picturesque cool-down. There’s definitely no shortage of things to do in Carson City in summer when you have Lake Tahoe as your backyard! Swim, boat, or lounge lakeside.

2. Grab an Ice-Cold Treat

Nothing says summer in Carson City like something sweet and chilly. Summer in Carson City doesn’t mean you have to stay outside all day (and, let’s face it—sometimes you just want to bask in the air conditioning!). In fact, some of the most memorable things to do in Carson City in summer happen indoors.

  • Step into The Nevada State Museum to explore everything from underground mine replicas to ancient mammoths. 
  • Head next door to the Nevada State Railroad Museum, where you can learn about the region’s deep railroading history, and then ride a real steam engine on select weekends!
  • Let your kids’ imaginations run wild and give yourself a break from the heat at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. This venue is packed with interactive exhibits, pint-sized play spaces, and creative fun.
  • Step into the story of Nevada’s Native peoples at the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum. Housed in a stunning stone building, the museum shares powerful history, art, and voices from Stewart alumni.

4. Kick Back in the Shade

Not quite ready to head indoors? There are still plenty of ways to enjoy summer in Carson City without melting. These events keep things cool by happening in the shade or after the sun starts to dip.

  • Father’s Day Powwow: Celebrate tradition and community at this powerful event hosted at Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum. With drum circles, dancers in regalia, and vendors serving cool drinks and handmade crafts, it’s an immersive way to learn about Native culture in the region.
  • Levitt AMP Summer Concert Series: These events are for those who love music, food trucks, and hanging out with their friends. Every week from late June to late August, you can enjoy a free concert at The Change Companies Stage in Brewery Arts Center Plaza.
  • Taste of Downtown: One ticket gets you bites and sips from Carson City’s top eateries—all served up al fresco. As the sun starts to set, downtown turns into a walkable wonderland of flavors and live music. 
  • Farmer’s Market: Start your Saturday off with a little bit of everything! This local favorite opens at 8:30 am and runs till 1:00 pm. You’ll find fresh produce, artisan goods, and shaded booths lining the pavilion in Mills Park.
