Spooner Lake is a recreational and natural oasis only 15 minutes from Carson City at the intersection of State Route 28 and U.S. 50. It is popular for picnicking, catch-and-release fishing, hiking, and Mountain Biking. Spooner Lake is a major trail head for gaining access to the Spooner backcountry which comprises more than 12,000 acres of forested open space with over 50 miles of hiking, equestrian and mountain biking trails and primitive roads. Vehicles are not permitted in the backcountry, which has been designated as a state primitive area. Spooner Summit rental concession offers overnight stays in backcountry cabins and mountain bike rentals for riding miles of trails in the summer months and Cross Country skis and snowshoes in the winter months. For those looking for a great adventure, Spooner Lake can also be accessed by a massive climb on mountain bike from Carson City by peddling up King St west and continuing up the dirt road, known as the Old Lincoln Highway, 12 miles to the top of Spooner Summit.
